SAN BERNARDINO (Feb. 4, 2017) — Daniel Romo delivered a grand slam in the opener, and
Sabino Ramirez took a hard-luck loss in the nightcap, but No. 16 Dixie State was too strong in sweeping the Coyotes, 13-6 and 5-4.
The clubs complete their weekend series Sunday morning at Fiscalini Field. First pitch is 11 a.m.
Game 1: Dixie State 13, Coyotes 6
The Trailblazers raced to an 11-0 lead before the Coyotes closed the gap in the seventh and eighth.
Dominic Campeau got the Coyotes on the board in the seventh, delivering a one-out single to short that scored
Lucas Martinez, who led off the inning with a single.
Then in the eight, three straight through the left side culminated with a
Nick Grimes single that brought in
Damion Edmonds. Then Romo clubbed his slam, a deep shot to left and the Coyotes cut the deficit to 11-6.
Dillon Fahr had three hits, and Martinez and Romo each had two hits.
DSU got home runs from Logan Porter, Trey Kamachi, and Jake Davison.
Coyotes starter
Don Sullivan struck out one in 4 1/3 innings. Dixie starter Mason Hilty gave up just two hits in six innings.
Game 2: Dixie State 5, Coyotes 4
Ramirez debuted his CSUSB career and gave coach
Dave Martinez and his team seven innings with four strikeouts, four walks and allowing six hits.
But the right-hander could not solve the Trailblazers' Trevor Mildenburg, who homered twice and finished 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI.
Down 4-0 entering the fifth, CSUSB got going with a three-run inning. Edmonds came up with an RBI-double, and two batters later, Fahr came through with a double to left that scored Edmonds. Fahr later scored on a wild pitch.
Edmonds finished with two hits.
