Coyotes take season series from UCSD

LA JOLLA (Oct. 14, 2017) — Behind junior setter JayAnn DeHoog's 49 assists, CSUSB answered back Saturday night with an impressive five-set win over host UC San Diego in CCAA play.

What the victory means
CSUSB improved to 12-7 overall and 8-3 in the CCAA, but more importantly swept the Tritons (14-4, 8-3) in their CCAA South regular-season matches. CSUSB returns to Coussoulis Arena for a five-match home stand, beginning Saturday night against Cal Poly Pomona.

DeHoog back
The Bakersfield junior averaged a little better than 12 assists per set and that almost always leads to good things. She also added 12 digs with three block assists, and even kicked in two kills.

She's reliable
Senior OH Lauren Nicholson fired off 21 kills with 22.5 points in the 25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23 victory. She had six kills in both the first and fourth set and had nine of her 18 digs in the fourth. In CCAA matches only, the Upland native is hitting .278 and averages 4.4 kills/set.

Inside the numbers
CSUSB took control in the fourth set after 11 ties and seven lead changes. Down 23-22, Sascha Dominique placed a kill to tie the set. After a UCSD attack error and a Tritons' timeout, Hailey Jackson laced a kill for the victory.

That's 10 digs in a set
Freshman L Leilia To'omalatai had 25 digs with 10 in the final set. She also had one of CSUSB's five service aces. Four other Coyotes reached double digits digs — Nicholson, Alexis Cardoza (12), DeHoog and Hannah Barrett (10).
