SAN BERNARDINO (Sept. 3, 2016) — CSUSB shook aside the frustration of an Opening Day loss with a one-sided 3-0 win over Montana State-Billings in nonconference men's soccer Saturday afternoon at Coyote Premier Field.
The Coyotes (1-1 overall) scored three goals inside a 10-minute span in the second half, thanks to an assist and a pair of goals from senior
Diego Casillas. It helped ease their 3-0 loss on Thursday against Simon Fraser in which CSUSB did not have one shot on goal.
A scoreless first half in which both teams combined for seven shots gave way to an impressive flurry in which Casillas stood tall against the Yellowjackets (0-2) from Billings, Mont.
In the 61
st minute, he fired in a corner kick that
Humberto Salcedo deftly gathered and placed to the far right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Six minutes later, Casillas was on the receiving end of a foul inside the box, and he made MSUB with a penalty kick and a 2-0 lead.
Not two minutes later, teammate
Hieu Ngo gathered the ball and fed Casillas, who headed the ball for the insurmountable 3-0 lead.
Freshman
Jacob Huber improved his record to 1-1 with his first shutout. He had three saves – all in the second half.
CSUSB next plays Saturday afternoon at Concordia in Irvine.
