SAN BERNARDINO (Sept. 17, 2016) — The 13
th-ranked Coyotes gutted out a 3-0 win over visiting Humboldt State in their home debut Saturday night at Coussoulis Arena.
The Coyotes, behind junior OH
Lauren Nicholson's 14 kills and senior All-American
Malika O'Brien's 12 kills and .425 attack percentage, swept past the Lumberjacks 26-24, 25-21, 25-18 for their third straight victory.
This was a night that the Coyotes needed a bit of time to on track. HSU jumped out to a 10-5 advantage in the first set before CSUSB got rolling. A kill from freshman
Kaili Scott opened a 10-3 run and pushed ahead 15-13 on a kill from
Jayann DeHoog.
CSUSB extended the lead to 21-16 on a kill from Nicholson, but the Jacks wouldn't go away. HSU climbed back and the set was tied four times and as late as 24-24. That's when freshman
Moira Murphy threw down a kill and her team won the set on an HSU ball handling error.
In the second, there was just one lead change and CSUSB took the lead for good at 20-19 on another kill from Murphy. A kill from O'Brien and two from Nicholson pushed the CSUSB advantage at 23-21 before the Coyotes closed out on a kill from sophomore
Hailey Jackson.
CSUSB hit .222 in the third and utilized nine HSU attack errors for the sweep. O'Brien had five of her 12 kills in the final set, and Nicholson had four and Murphy three.
DeHoog set up 36 assists, and
Abbey Vollkommer led in aces (three), while junior
Kelsey Osgood had 14 digs.
Both Jackson and O'Brien had three block assists each.
CSUSB returns to the road this upcoming week with matches against Cal State Dominguez Hills (Friday) and Cal State L.A. (Saturday).
HSU (6-4, 1-1) was led by Alex Hasenstab's eight kills. The Jacks hit just .153.
