Box Score 2 ARCATA (March 19, 2016) -- No. 4 Humboldt State secured a four-game series sweep over the Coyotes on Saturday, handing CSUSB defeats of 4-3 and 7-5 in CCAA softball.
The Coyotes (17-16 overall and 12-12 CCAA) look to snap their eight-game losing streak when they return home to face Sonoma State this Friday and Saturday.
Game 1: HSU 4, Coyotes 3HSU scored three of its four runs on solo shots, but the final two were of heart-breaking variety.
Trailing 2-0, CSUSB earned its first lead of the series with a three-run sixth.
Kaylee Gemmell led off with a double and
Taylor Ancona followed with one of her own.
Gemmell came home to score when
Ashley Leffingwell reached on an error. Then, Brianna Quintana ripped a two-run single to left and CSUSB had its 3-2 lead.
In the HSU sixth, Breonna Bejaran led off with a solo home run to right off
Cassandra Williams to tie the game at 3-3.
In the seventh, HSU got the win when Tiffany Hollingsworth hit a two-out home run to left center for the walk-off win.
Jessica Angulo,
Monica Maddox, Ratliff and Quintana all had two hits.
Williams had five strikeouts with two walks.
Game 2: HSU 7, Coyotes 5Kayln Paque delivered a grand slam in the first and a solo shot in the sixth to account for five of HSU's seven runs.
HSU scored five runs in the first inning with Paque keying the attack with her slam.
Down 6-0, CSUSB answered back on Ancona's grand slam of her own to left. Gemmell added an RBI-single in the seventh that cut the deficit to 7-5. The Coyotes threatened with the bases loaded and two outs, but could not get any closer.
Ancona had the only extra-base hit for the Coyotes.
HSU improved to 20-2-1, 15-1.
