Box Score 2 ARCATA (March 18, 2016) – CCAA-leading Humboldt State took a pair from the Coyotes in their weekend softball series opener Friday, winning 2-1 and 3-0.
CSUSB (17-13 overall, 12-10 CCAA) has lost six straight and look to get back on the winning track in Saturday's series finale doubleheader that begins at 11 a.m. HSU improved to 18-2-1, 13-1.
Game 1: HSU 2, Coyotes 1An error by second baseman
Monica Maddox led to HSU earning the victory in the bottom of the seventh.
Tied at 1-1, HSU's Cyndi Chavez led off and reached on a fielding error by Maddox. One batter later, Hanna Holland doubled to right center that brought in Chavez for the win.
HSU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Holland reached on a walk, and eventually scored on a wild pitch from Coyotes starter
Cassandra Williams.
CSUSB tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth,
Morgan Ratliff reached on an error and moved to second on a sac bunt from
Taylor Ancona.
Kaylee Gemmell singled to right, but was cut down at second, bringing Ratliff to third.
Jessica Brown then delivered a two-out single to right that scored Ratliff.
Williams struck out six, walked five and allowed four hits. Her counterpart Katie Obbema struck out three and gave up six hits.
Gemmell and
Ashley Leffingwell each had two hits.
Game 2: HSU 3, Coyotes 0Juli Pena hit a three-run home run and Madison Williams threw a four-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts for HSU.
Jessica Angula, Ratliff, Maddox and Gemmell each had a single against Williams, who did not allow a Coyote to reach third base.
Williams took the loss and dropped to 12-8. She threw three innings with four strikeouts. Freshman
Amanda Ramirez threw three innings of relief and had one strikeout and one walk.
