Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Feb. 6, 2016) -- CSUSB found its way with timely pitching and big-time hitting in earning a pair of victories over Colorado Mesa and Western Washington in continuing play of the Desert Stinger Tournament on Saturday.

CSUSB defeated Colorado Mesa 12-4 in a game shortened in the fifth and stopped Western Washington 8-2.

The Coyotes, now 5-1 overall, complete tourney play Sunday against Central Washington.

There is nothing like an 11-run lead before the opponent has a chance to hit, but that was the momentum builder that coach Jim Maier received from his team in the rout over the Mavericks.

Sophomore Kaylee Gemmell had three RBI in the inning – one on a bases-loaded walk and the others on a two-run single – and freshman Morgan Ratliff had two singles in the 11-run, seven-hit inning that sent 17 Coyotes to the plate.

The Coyotes padded the lead to 12-0 in the second, thanks to Ratliff's run-scoring single up the middle that scored Monica Maddox, who led off with a single.

Ratliff finished with three hits, while Jessica Angulo and Amanda Herrera each had two.

On the mound, Cassandra Williams threw three innings and improved to 3-0. She had three strikeouts without a walk and scattered four hits.

Coyotes 8, Western Washington 2
Jessica Brown gave the Coyotes the go-ahead runs with a three-run home run in the fourth inning and CSUSB earned a valuable West Region victory over the Vikings.

Trailing 1-0 through three innings, Caelan Smith singled to right. Two batters later, Gemmell reached on a double down the left-field line and that set-up Brown's blast to left field.

Smith added an RBI-single through the left side that scored Monica Maddox, who singled.

For good measure in the sixth, Ashley Leffingwell doubled to right for an RBI that scored Jessica Angulo.

Williams threw seven innings with two strikeouts and scattering five hits. Her two runs allowed featured just one earned.
