Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO (Feb. 12, 2016) – CSUSB overcame a two-hit shutout by Pioneers' Sierra Clark in the opener with a solid 7-4 victory over the Pioneers in the second game in Friday's CCAA softball doubleheader at Coyote Park.
The Coyotes snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory and take a 6-5 overall and 1-1 CCAA slate into Saturday's series finale. CSUEB is 2-2, 1-1.
Game 1: Cal State East Bay 8, Coyotes 0 6 inningsClark was the catalyst for the Pioneers and the Coyotes had no answers against the right-hander. She had nine strikeouts and did not allow a walk in her six innings. In fact, not one Coyote reached past first base for the game.
Caitlyn Olan singled to short in the second inning, and the Coyotes did not earn another hit off Clark until
Taylor Ancona singled to right with one out in the sixth.
Belle Placencia had three RBI on two hits, and Courtney Leyba had two RBI for the Pioneers.
Cassandra Williams took the loss, going 5 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts, two walks and five hits. Four of her six runs allowed were earned.
Game 2: Coyotes 7, Cal State East Bay 4The Coyotes did not waste any time making up for their struggles at the plate in the first game, scoring three runs in the first inning on just one hit for a lead they never relinquished. They were opportunistic runs as all three RBI came courtesy of fielder's choices by Olan,
Kaylee Gemmell and
Jessica Brown, respectively.
Jessica Angulo earned her double for the game on a shot to left center that scored
Monica Maddox (bunt) in the second. CSUSB stretched its lead 6-1 in the third with an RBI-triple by Brown and one from Maddox.
Angulo , who had three hits, scored on an error in the sixth.
Rose Marston supplied the power for the Pioneers with a solo home run to left in the fifth and two-run shot in the seventh.
Williams also pitched the nightcap and earned the victory to improve to 5-3. She struck out six, walked three and gave up six hits.
Olan and Maddox each had two hits.
