LA JOLLA (Oct. 29, 2016) — No. 19 CSUSB outpointed host UC San Diego with victories in the final two sets in its come-from-behind 3-2 win Saturday night at RIMAC Arena.
The victory was CSUSB's eighth straight as it improved to 17-4 overall and 11-2 in the CCAA.
Four Coyotes secured double figures in kills, led by
Lauren Nicholson's 18 kills in the 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 15-10 victory. All-American
Malika O'Brien and
Hailey Jackson followed with 14 each and
Kaili Scott 13.
In the fourth set with UCSD leading, the Coyotes scored five straight points for a 13-12 lead. Three ties took place until a 4-0 run – a kill from Scott, an
Abbey Vollkommer ace, a Jackson kill and block assists from
Moira Murphy and Jackson put the Coyotes up for good 20-16.
The Coyotes took control in the fifth, jumping out to a 14-6 lead before closing out the Tritons in five for the second time in two weeks.
CSUSB hit .238, and enjoyed a block party with Jackson leading in total blocks with a season-high 11 (1 solo, 10 assists).
Defensively, Vollkommer led with 30 digs, followed by
Jayann DeHoog with 16 and
Hannah Barrett 12. DeHoog had 55 assists.
The Coyotes remain on the road this week, playing at Cal State Monterey Bay (Friday) and Cal State East Bay (Saturday).
