SAN BERNARDINO (Oct. 27, 2016) — Reaching the 2016 postseason will come down to one more game for the Cal State San Bernardino men's soccer team.
The Coyotes put themselves back into CCAA Tournament contention after upsetting No. 10 UC San Diego 3-1 in CCAA play Thursday afternoon at Coyote Premier Field.
CSUSB (8-5-1, 6-4-1 CCAA) holds a one-point lead over Cal State Dominguez Hills for the sixth and final tournament berth. A victory over Cal State San Marcos on Saturday will guarantee CSUSB the sixth spot. Anything less depends upon the outcome of CSUDH's game at Humboldt State on Saturday.
The Coyotes shocked the Tritons (13-2-2, 8-2-1) with three second-half goals after trailing 1-0 through 55 minutes.
Senior
Diego Casillas tied the game in the 75
th minute when he drew penalty kick from a foul inside and tight. He buried the shot for his sixth goal of the year.
Then, seven minutes later, a free ball found its way to
Ivan Quintero, who rifled the ball into the net and brought the Coyotes bench off its seat.
And then for good measure, senior
Luca Falcone gathered the ball from about 35 yards out in front of the UCSD bench. GK Cameron McElfresh came out and Falcone lofted the ball up and away, over the GK and into the net for the insurmountable two-goal lead.
It was Falcone's first goal of the season.
CSUSB outshot the Tritons 12-8 with six corners.
Coyotes GK
Jacob Huber had two saves.
