Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO (Jan. 30, 2016) -- CSUSB opened the 2016 in style, taking a doubleheader sweep over Mercyhurst of Erie, Pa., 10-5 and 12-7.
Sophomores
Jessica Brown and
Kaylee Gemmell each had two home runs ont the day, with Brown accomplishing the feat in the opener. Nine of the team's 22 total hits went for extra bases
CSUSB is off until Friday-Sunday when it participates in the Desert Stinger Tourney in Las Vegas, Nev., and hosted by Montana State-Billings.
Game 1: Coyotes 10, Mercyhurst 5Brown and Gemmell got their game going in the second inning with the pair hitting consecutive solo shots. Brown lifted hers to deep center, and Gemmell followed to right center.
After Mercyhurst scored one run in the third, CSUSB earned a three-run fourth with RBIs from
Amanda Fitzgerald and
Taylor Ancona.
In the fifth, the Coyotes scored three runs, thanks to a run-scoring double from Caetlan Smith , and two batters batter on a fielder's choice from Brown.
Brown then made her Coyote debut a total success with a two-run shot in the sixth.
Brown went 3 for 4 with four RBI and
Jessica Angulo had two hits.
Junior LHP
Cassandra Williams was in complete control in her five innings. She struck out seven, did not issue a walk and gave up just the one run.
Game 2: Coyotes 12, Mercyhurst 7Gemmell added a solo home run in the first that capped a three-run first, then
Caitlyn Olan went 3-for-3 with three rBI for the winning Coyotes.
Down 7-6 entering the sixth, CSUSB struck with six runs of its own on five hits.
Olan and Brown each had two RBI.
Amanda Ramirez earned the victory, throwing six innings and scattering nine hits. All seven runs scored by the Lakers were earned.
