Menicucci manufactures mega offense

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO (April 3, 2015) -- The Coyotes pushed aside a tough start in their Friday doubleheader against Cal State East Bay, earning a split in CCAA softball at Coyote Park.

The Coyotes lost the opener 7-1, thanks to three home runs by the Pioneers, but came right back with a 12-8 victory in the second.

CSUSB (18-18, 10-11 CCAA) and Pioneers (21-16, 9-13) conclude their weekend series at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Game 1: Pioneers 7, Coyotes 1
Alyssa Ramos led CSUSB with two doubles and Victoria Lievanos connected on the Coyotes' only run-scoring opportunity.

Lievanos rippled a single to right that brought in Ramos, who doubled for the second time of the game, in the third.

But CSUEB scored two runs in the fourth, and put the game  away with four in the fifth.

Rose Marston was the difference maker with a three-run homer in the fifth. Marisa Lerma added a two-run shot in the fourth and Alex Vela homered in the sixth.

RHP Cassandra Williams had seven strikeouts for the Coyotes, but gave up six runs -- all earned.

Game 2: Coyotes 12, Pioneers 8
Mary Menicucci showed her best offensive effort of the season with a 3-for-5 performance, with a season-high five RBI.

The Coyotes sent 12 batters to the plate in the third wtih six hits. Ramos had a two-run single as did Menicucci.

Trailing 7-6 entering their half of the fourth, the Coyotes got going again with five runs to take the lead they would not relinquish.

All-American Nicole Nobbe had a solo homer and Thalia Ortiz earned a hard-luck RBI with a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Menicucci the answered with a two-run double to right center.

Nobbe, Lievanos, Williams and Briana Quintana all had two hits.

Freshman RHP Jamie Nelson earned the win with 5 1/3 innings, improving to 7-7. Williams came on in relief and was stellar, striking out five in an 1 2/3 innings for her second save of the year..
