Box Score 2 LA JOLLA (April 26, 2015) -- That CSUSB would be fighting for a CCAA softball tournament berth on the final day of the regular season is remarkable when one considers that head coach
Jim Maier took the job a month before the season started.
The Coyotes, who needed to win both games against host UC San Diego, fell just short of their goal, losing the opener 3-1 before ending the day on an upnote, winning 6-4.
CSUSB finished the 2015 season 28-24 overall and 20-15 in the CCAA. It finished fifth in the conference, just one-half game behind Chico State for the final tournament berth. The winning record is just the 11th time in program history the Coyotes have had a winning season and sets the course for success for years to come with Maier in command.
Game 1: Triton 3, Coyotes 1Erin Schneider hit a two-run home run for the Tritons in the third inning and the Coyotes could not get a timely hit in the opener.
CSUSB grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third on All-American
Nicole Nobbe's school-record 24th double that drove in
Arianna Hernandez. But that would end the scoring for the Coyotes, who stranded five runners in scoring position.
UCSD added an insurance run in the sixth for the two-run lead.
In the seventh, pinch-hitter
Briana Quintana led off with a single. Hernandez bounced into a fielder's choice that forced out Quintana. Nobbe then walked for runners at first and second with one out.
Thalia Ortiz then grounded into a game-ending double play.
Hernandez, the No. 9 hitter, led CSUSB with two hits.
LHP
Cassandra Williams took the hard-luck loss, scattering four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Game 2: Coyotes 6, Tritons 4Down 2-1 through four innings, CSUSB took command with a five-run sixth and held on for the win.
The Coyotes sent 11 batters to the plate, and scored five runs on four hits.
Victoria Lievanos delivered a two-run single through the left side to key the inning. Adding RBI were
Mary Menicucci,
Alyssa Ramos and Ortiz.
Ortiz led with a 3-for-3 game, while Ramos and Lievanos each had two hits.
Freshman RHP
Jamie Nelson threw 5.1 innings for the win and Williams earned the save.
UCSD finished the season 25-25, 15-20.
