Long ball and top-notch pitching lead to sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARSON (April 17, 2015) — Timely hitting and powerful pitching usually lead to good things and that is what happened for the Coyotes in their CCAA softball opener against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday.

The Coyotes pounded out 11 hits with home runs by Mary Menicucci, Kaylee Gemmell and Cassandra Williams, and Williams threw one-hit, shutout ball over her six innings in an impressive 8-0 victory over the Toros.

Melissa Roberts had three hits with a double and a triple for the Coyotes.

Roberts gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead on a run-scoring triple in the second, and Menicucci followed with a two-run shot that cleared the left-center wall. It was her second blast of the season.

Then in the sixth, freshman Gemmell clocked a three-run shot to center and gave the Coyotes necessary breathing room with a 6-0 lead. It also was her second HR of the season.

And in the seventh, Williams helped her cause with her fifth homer of the season, a one-out, two-run shot to center.

On the mound, Williams (14-10) was in complete control with nine strikeouts and just one hit allowed – a lead-off single in the fourth. RHP Jamie Nelson had one strikeout in the seventh.

Gemmell and Williams also finished with two-hit games.

Game 2: Coyotes 8, Toros 5
Menicucci ended her day with three runs batted in and Gemmell came through with a two-run triple to lift the Coyotes to the sweep.

Menicucci keyed the Coyotes in the first inning with a two-out, two-run single.

With the score tied at 3-3, CSUSB got going in the fifth with three runs. Gemmell hit a triple to right that brought in Victoria Lievanos and Roberts. Gemmell then scored on an illegal pitch.

Roberts and Menicucci added RBI in the sixth and CSUSB went on to earn the win in coach Jim Maier's return to CSUDH. The first-year skipper previously coached CSUDH for 13 seasons.

Nelson earned the win in 3.1 innings of relief. She gave up just two runs and only one was earned.

CSUSB is now 25-21 overall and 17-12 in the CCAA, good for fourth in the league with six games remaining.
