Box Score 2 ARCATA (March 7, 2015) -- The Coyotes capped off a good weekend off softball, earning a split of a doubleheader Saturday against No. 19 Humboldt State.
The Coyotes were defeated 5-2 in the opener, before coming back in a 5-4 win over the Lumberjacks. CSUSB (11-13, 3-8 CCAA) returns to Coyote Park this weekend when it takes on Chico State.
Game 1: Lumberjacks 5, Coyotes 2
All-American Nicole Nobbe continues her stellar senior year with a 2-for-4 efffort, but the Coyotes stranded six runners on base.
Down 3-0, the Coyotes cut the Jacks' lead to one with a two-run fifth. Melissa Roberts connected on a two-out, two-run double to left that scored Mary Menicucci and Monica Maddox.
Roberts' double was the Coyotes' only extra-base hit.
Cassandra Williams took the loss in six innings with eight strikeouts.
Game 2: Coyotes 5, Lumberjacks 4
The Coyotes scored two unearned runs in the second and took command with a three-run third for the victory.
The scored was tied at 2-2 through two innings when CSUSB came through with its pivotal inning.
Nobbe led off with a double down the left-field line, and two batters later, Victoria Lievanos crushed a shot over the center-field wall to put the Coyotes ahead 4-3. Roberts then followed with a single up the middle and later scored on a single by Kaylee Gemmell.
Nobbe was 3-for-3 and Cassandra Williams had a double.
Freshman RHP Jamie Nelson (3-5) earned the victory in five innings. Williams came on in the fifth and threw two innings of one-hit, shutout relief for her first save of the season.
