Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO (March 13, 2015) -- CSUSB earned its first CCAA sweep of the season, taking a doubleheader from Chico State 3-1 and 5-1 in softball Friday afternoon at Coyote Park.
The Coyotes (13-13, 5-8 CCAA) won their third straight game and look to add on they face the Wildcats (12-6, 9-5) at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Game 1: Coyotes 3, Wildcats 1
Sophomore LHP Cassandra Williams was outstanding on the mound for the Coyotes, throwing 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball as her teammates got the job done early.
Melissa Roberts connected on a two-out triple to right that brought in Alyssa Ramos and Williams helped herself out with a double to left that brought in Roberts and CSUSB led 2-0 through one inning.
Then in the second, All-American Nicole Nobbe's one-out double to left brought in Monica Maddox, who reached on a fielder's choice.
The game remained 3-0 Coyotes until the Wildcats scratched one in the seventh.
But Williams danced out of trouble wtih runners on first and second and one out. She got Alli Cook to flyout to center and Tori Zimmerman flew out to right to end the threat and the game.
Williams had two doubles and was the only Coyote with more than one hit.
Meanwhile on the mound, she had six strikeouts with just one walk.
Game 2: Coyotes 5, Wildcats 1
CSUSB secured five unearned runs off Chico State's Haley Gilham on just four hits. The Wildcats committed seven errors that aided the Coyotes' cause.
In fact, Ashley Leffingwell came through with the Coyotes' only RBI when her bunt single worked its way through a drawn-in Wildcats infield in the fourth inning.
Roberts scored two runs and Nobbe went 2-for-4. Ramos had the only other hit for the Coyotes.
On the mound, freshman RHP Jamie Nelson (4-5) was solid. She scattered eight hits -- all singles -- and had three strikeouts without a walk. Her only run allowed was unearned in the second.
