Box Score SAN BERNARDINO (Feb. 26, 2015) – Cal State San Bernardino fought tooth-and-nail against Cal Poly Pomona, but fell in overtime to the Broncos 85-80 before a crowd of 529 at Coussoulis Arena.
The Coyotes, ranked eighth in the NCAA West Region poll, fell to 18-7 overall and 14-7 in the CCAA, while the 7
th-ranked Broncos improved to 19-6, 17-4.
CSUSB had its shot at winning with six seconds left in regulation and
Chelsea Barnes at the line with the score tied at 74-74. Barnes, who finished with a career and team season-high 34 points, missed both shots and CPP couldn't get a shot off in time.
In overtime,
Brianna Harden gave the Coyotes a 77-76 lead on a 3-pointer early, but the Broncos came right back and outscored CSUSB 9-3 over the final 4:15 for the win.
CSUSB shot the lights out in the first half, hitting 61.5 percent from the field and Barnes scoring 17 points on 8-of-10 shots. It led at the break 41-38, but CPP was equally adept at the field hitting 51.7 percent of its shots.
Both teams played neck-and-neck the second half with all but 20 seconds a two-possession game. CPP led by as many as seven, but a 13-5 Coyote run put CSUSB ahead 60-59 with 6:52 left on an
Adriana Brodie jumper.
The Coyotes remained out front and went ahead by four on three separate occasions, but couldn't put the Broncos away.
A
Brianna Harden layup ahead 70-66 with 3:02 left, but CPP answered with a 6-1 run and led 72-71 on a layup from Jada Blackwell with 1:35 left.
Barnes came right back on a three-point play to lift the Coyotes up 74-72 with 1:15 left. Blackwell answered with two free throws and that set up the final action in the final minute.
Both teams missed on field goal attempts – a 3-pointer from
Chelsea Austin and a jumper from Tyler Woods.
On Woods' miss, Austin grabbed the rebound with 19 seconds to go and the Coyotes worked the clock to six second when Mack drove in. She missed the shot, but Barnes got the offensive board and was fouled by Lovett to set up the chance for the win.
Barnes finished 13-of-22 from the field and had 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Harden had 19 points with seven rebounds and Mack finished with 11. Brodie was the only other Coyote in double figures with 10.
CPP was led by Blackwell's 19 points. She picked up two fouls early in the game and remained on the bench from most of the half. Ariel Marsh had 18.
CSUSB closes the regular season Saturday night against UC San Diego on Senior Night. The Coyotes will honor their only senior,
Briana Baker, in a pregame ceremony.
GAME NOTES: The game guarantees the Coyotes will play the No. 4-No. 5 game in opening round of next week's CCAA Tournament in Stockton. That game will be played at 12:05 p.m. Thursday.
