Austin to the rescue

Box Score SAN BERNARDINO (Feb. 14, 2015) – After struggling from the floor all night with sub-standard shooting, the Coyotes got their answer from Chelsea Austin with 18 seconds remaining in the game.

The junior fired up a shot from NBA 3-point range that ripped through the net and CSUSB held off visiting Cal State Stanislaus 62-60 in CCAA women's basketball Saturday night at Coussoulis Arena.

Fellow juniors Chelsea Barnes and Brianna Harden each had double-doubles for the Coyotes, who improved to 17-5 overall and 13-5 in the CCAA. The victory secured a berth in next month's CCAA Tournament in Stockton, played March 5-7.

Barnes led CSUSB with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Harden had 12 points with 11 rebounds. Junior Adriana Brodie was the other Coyote in double figures with 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals.

It was not CSUSB's best field goal effort as it shot just 33 percent, and only 25.9 percent in the second half. What the Coyotes did best, though, was at the free throw line where they outscored the Warriors 21-6.

Eight ties and 12 lead changes took place and the visiting Warriors did their best to create trouble all night long for the Coyotes.

Briana Cotton gave the Warriors a 60-58 lead on a 3-pointer with 1:35 to go.

On CSUSB's next possession, Brodie tried to go inside and was fouled. She hit the second of a two-shot foul to pull her team to within a point with 1:14 to go.

Brodie then came up with a block on CSUS's Riley Holladay, but the Warriors retained possession. Ana Burch was short on a shot and the Coyotes had their chance with 44 seconds to go.

CSUSB worked the ball around and Brodie found Austin alone by 26 feet out from the far left wing. She set up with a 3 and the Coyotes had their 62-60 lead with 18 seconds to go.

Chelsea Sanders-Curry took the Warriors last shot, a jumper from outside the paint, but it was off and the Coyotes had their victory.

Coach Renee Jimenez again received a quality team effort with 17 assists on 19 field goals.  The Coyotes had 10 steals and three blocks.

CSUS (6-16, 4-14) was led by Erika Larsen's 10 points. The Warriors finished 24 of 52 from the floor after hitting near the 50-percent level for most of the game.
