LOS ANGELES (Nov. 13, 2015) -- No. 22 CSUSB and Cal State L.A. pushed each other through a five-set ordeal Friday night, and the Coyotes were the ones who walked off the Eagles Nest court victorious.
Sophomore
Lauren Nicholson continued her fine play as of late, leading the Coyotes with 22 kills and a .298 attack effort in their 19-25, 28-26, 25-21, 32-34, 15-11 victory over the Golden Eagles. CSUSB improved to 23-4, 16-3 CCAA and secured the second position in next week's CCAA Tournament in La Jolla.
Senior OH
Alexandra Torline had 19 kills with 17 digs, and junior MB
Malika O'Brien had 16 kills with four block assists. Senior
Ashley Solis had 10 kills with a team-high 19 digs.
Down 1-0, CSUSB answered back in the second thanks to six kills from both Nicholson and Torline. Tied at 26-26, Torline gave the Coyotes the lead with a kill and the Coyotes won the set with a CSULA attack error.
The Coyotes were a bit more balanced in the third set with O'Brien hitting four kills, and Torline and Nicholson each with three as they hit .278 with 14 digs.
Thirteen ties and six lead changes were indicative of the back-and-forth fervor in the fourth. Trailing 24-21, the Coyotes pulled off a near unbelievable comeback. Torline and Nicholson had consecutive kills to pull CSUSB to within two points of the lead. And the set was tied thanks to an error by CSULA.
The set was tied seven more times until a kill from Taylor Kushner put the Golden Eagles up 33-32 and they won on a Coyote attack error.
In the fifth and tied at 10-10, O'Brien hammered consecutive kills and setter
Jayann DeHoog added another for a 13-10 Coyotes lead. A block from O'Brien and Solis putshed the lead to four, and one point later, Torline earned a kill for the match winner.
The Coyotes complete the regular season Saturday night at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Please note the match time of 7:30 p.m.
CSULA is 19-9, 11-8.
