Zeke DeBlase keyed the Coyotes with 16 points and
Phil Reed added a double-double in their 85-65 loss to Azusa Pacific in the season opener Friday night.
Reed scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for CSUSB, which takes on Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday at APU.
A late second-half flurry helped the Cougars take a 43-30 lead at halftime and they did not allow the Coyotes any closer than 14 points in the final half.
CSUSB hit 42.3 percent from the field on 22 of 52 shooting. It was just 11 of 29 in the first half, while the Cougars were unstoppable, hitting 57.1 percent in the first 20 minutes and 55.6 percent for the game.
Three of DeBlase's four field goals were 3-pointers, but his teammates combined for 0-for-9 from beyond the arc.
Keith Smith had 11 points in 22 minutes. Freshman
Dylan Leonard had nine points off the bench in 21 minutes.
Jared Zoller led defending NCAA West Region champion APU with 21 points. LyDell Cardwell had 14.
