AZUSA (Nov. 14, 2015) -- What a difference a day makes.
CSUSB answered back from a rough outing against Azusa Pacific on Friday with a standout effort from the field in its 81-56 victory over Notre Dame de Namur in men's basketball Saturday at Azusa Pacific.
Brandon Staton led a barrage of offensive Coyote power, scoring 18 points with four 3-pointers and his team fired 59.3 percent from the field against the Argos. That percentage ranks as the 11th best by a
Jeff Oliver-coached team that began 14 seasons ago.
Reserves
Desi Barmore (14 points) and
Juan Martinez (11 points) also scored in double figures as Oliver's bench outscored the Argos 31-6. Starter
Phil Reed had 12 points with six rebounds.
CSUSB scored on its final four shots of the first half for a 40-33 lead at the break that capped a 63-percent clip from the field on 17 of 27 shooting.
Then in the second half, the Coyotes utilized a key 17-4 midway through and eventually led by as many as 27 points with a minute left.
NDNU got to within five points (50-45) with 12:45 left in the game. Martinez thwarted any type of Argos' comeback with two straight 3-pointers and the Coyotes remained ahead by double digits for the final 10:57 of the game.
Staton and
Zeke DeBlase each had four assists, while DeBlase added eight points and senior
Aaron Cheatum had nine with five rebounds.
Seven Coyotes accounted for assists, while Barmore swatted away three blocks with six rebounds.
Jordan Williams had six points off the bench, hitting on all three of his attempts.
The Coyotes (1-1) make their home debut Friday night against Winona (Minn.) State.
Korey Serna scored a game-high 23 points for the Argos, now 0-2. No other player scored in double figures.
