No. 20 Coyotes winning streak snapped at four

ROHNERT PARK (Oct. 2, 2015) -- No. 20 Cal State San Bernardino had its four-match winning streak snapped in a hard-fought 3-2 loss at Sonoma State in CCAA volleyball Friday night.

CSUSB (11-3, 4-2 CCAA) completes the weekend Saturday night at Humboldt State.

Senior Alexandra Torline led the Coyotes with 19 kills in the 14-25, 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 12-15 defeat to the Seawolves (9-3, 5-1).

The match featured 31 ties and 13 lead changes, but the host Seawolves had 76 kills to the Coyotes' 63 and found momentum late in each of the last two sets to win.

After struggling in the first set, CSUSB came right back and got the match under control with victories in sets two and three. Torline had six of her 19 kills in the second set in a collective .310 attack percentage.

Ashley Solis gave the Coyotes a 24-22 lead with a kill after their timeout, and after a CSUSB blocking error, Torline came through the set winner on a kill.

In the third, the Coyotes gained control for good at 13-12 as SSU got to within one point just once (22-21) before a block from Malika O'Brien and Solis, and a kill from McIntosh gave the Coyotes necessary distance.

Despite hitting .316 in the fourth, the Coyotes allowed the Seawolves back into the set while leading by as many as three points at 21-18.

SSU scored five straight points before a kill from McIntosh made the score 23-22.

But a Coyotes service error put the score at 24-22 SSU and it stayed ahead for the set victory and tied the match at 2-2.

Tied at 9-9 in the fifth, SSU ran off three straight points and remained ahead by at least two points down the stretch.

Lauren Nicholson had 12 kills and Solis had 11 for the Coyotes. Freshman setter Jayann DeHoog had 51 assists and Vollkommer had two service aces.

DeHoog led the Coyotes in digs with 18 and Nicholson had 16 and Solis 14.

CSUSB led in blocks with 20 block assists and was led by O'Brien's five. DeHoog, Torline and McIntosh each had four.
