POMONA (Oct. 15, 2015) — Dominance on the attack and on the block told the tale in No. 22 Cal State San Bernardino's 3-1 win over host Cal Poly Pomona in CCAA volleyball Thursday night.
Behind All-American
Brenna McIntosh's season-high 12 blocks (3 solos, 9 assists) and senior
Alexandra Torline's 21 kills, CSUSB secured a 25-13, 24-26, 25-13, 26-24 victory over the Broncos.
CSUSB improved to 16-3 overall, 9-2 in the CCAA and won its fifth straight and ninth in its last 10 matches. The Coyotes hit .326 on the attack with 54 kills and overpowered the Broncos with 20 total team blocks.
With McIntosh leading the way, she was joined by
Ashley Solis with six block assists and one solo.
Malika O'Brien had one solo and four block assists and Torline had two solos and two block assists.
All told, five Coyotes had multiple block assists and four had solo blocks.
CSUSB hit .333 in the opener and held the Broncos to a 7-7-29 showing on the attack.
Abbey Vollkommer helped with two service aces and
Lauren Nicholson added another. But CPP (11-8, 7-4) answered back with a much stronger second set.
Beginning at 20-20, the set was tied four more times until consecutive kills from Deanna Blaine earned the 1-1 tie on the match.
CSUSB got going again in the third, much like the first. It hit .435, thanks to three kills apiece from O'Brien, Torline and McIntosh and two block assists from O'Brien, McIntosh and Solis.
And in the fourth and final set, CSUSB trailed 20-19 before Torline got going. She threw down three kills and put the Coyotes up 24-22. The Broncos came back to tie it, but Torline added one more kill for a 25-24 CSUSB lead and a bad CPP set gave the set and the match to the Coyotes.
Freshman
Jayann DeHoog had 42 assists with 13 digs. Senior
Kaitlyn Christner led with 14 digs.
The Coyotes remain on the road Saturday at Cal State Monterey Bay.
