Box Score POMONA (Jan. 24, 2015) -- A rampant rally could not be overcome by a slow start in the Coyotes' 61-57 loss at Cal Poly Pomona in CCAA women's play Saturday night at Kellogg Gym.
Â
Junior
Chelsea Barnes led with 18 points and fellow junior
Alexcia Mack added 15 for the Coyotes (12-4, 8-4 CCAA), who had their five-game winning streak snapped by the Broncos.
Â
CSUSB never held the lead against CPP as the Coyotes missed their first nine shots on the night. That allowed the Broncos (12-4, 10-2) to gain meaningful separation as they went on to a 31-11 lead with 4:43 remaining in the first half, thanks to a 15-0 advantage on 3-pointers.
Â
The Coyotes made their run when it seemed any type of gain was impossible. Down 53-33 with 8:33 remaining,
Chelsea Austin buried two straight 3-pointers. Then, Barnes hit a free throw and added a layup and the Coyotes trailed 53-42 with 4:47 left.
Â
CSUSB came right back to reach a single-digit deficit at eight, thanks a 3-pointer from Mack and after two free throws from Ashley Lovett,
Bisera Peshkova answered with a 3 of her own and CSUSB got to within seven (55-48) with 2:42 left.
Â
After Lovett's free throw put CPP up 56-48, Mack came back with another three, and the Coyotes trailed 56-51 with 1:18 left.
Â
Ariel Marsh came right back with a pair of free throws, but
Adriana Brodie's layup and two free throws from Barnes cut CPP's lead to 58-55 with 34 seconds left.
Â
After a free throw from May Williams, Mack came down the court, was fouled and hit two free throws to come all the way back and the Coyotes were within two, 59-57 with 11 seconds left.
Â
But the rally fell short when Lauren Goecke hit two free throws in the final two seconds for the four-point loss.
Â
CSUSB can thank its defensive pressure for answering back as it did not allow CPP to score a field goal in the game's final eight-plus minutes. They also were much more physical in the final half, outrebounding the Broncos 29-14.
Â
The Coyotes begin the second half of CCAA play Thursday night when they return to Coussoulis Arena against San Francisco State.
Â
Marsh finished the night with a game-high 20 points
