Box Score CHICO (Jan. 10, 2015) -- Weekend road sweeps are always in demand and the way the Coyotes completed their set of games was particularly impressive Saturday night against Chico State.
CSUSB outscored the Wildcats 13-0 down the stretch and pulled away late to win 56-45 in CCAA play at Acker Gymnasium.
Behind junior Alexcia Mack's game-high 17 points, the Coyotes improved their record to 9-3 overall and 5-3 in the CCAA. The victory matches last season's total victory by the Coyotes, who also established a defensive season-best scoring output against one of the perennial favorites in the conference.
A successful outcome was in doubt with CSUSB trailing 45-43 with 4:14 remaining in the game. A layup and free throw from Adriana Brodie set the run in motion, and a jumper and layup by Chelsea Barnes gave the Coyotes a 50-45 lead with 1:15 to go.
Chelsea Austin then stepped up and hit a layup, then went right to the free throw line after Chico State committed a foul on the inbounds play.
Austin hit both free throws to put the Coyotes up 54-45 and Mack finished off the run five seconds later with two more free throws.
Mack entered the game 10 points shy of 700 career points and she made the standard with the victory. She played all 40 minutes, hit 6-of-16 from the floor with 4-of-4 free throws. She also had a game-high five assists wtih a steal and two rebounds.
CSUSB held an advantage with its ability to get to the free throw line, outscoring the Wildcats 13-3 at the line.
Brianna Harden had nine points with four rebounds, and Barnes had eight with two steals and two rebounds.
Brodie earned game-high rebound honors with 11, and had four assists.
Chico State (4-8, 1-7) was led by Whitney Branham's 14 points.
