TURLOCK -- Coach Tacy Duncan's Coyotes softball squad earned a pair of victories Sunday and won the consolation bracket at the Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.

The Coyotes defeated Western Oregon 3-1 and earned a 7-2 victory over Chaminade to improve their record to 25-17.

CSUSB returns to CCAA play this week when it travels to Hayward for a four-game series against Cal State East Bay.

Coyotes 3, Western Oregon 1

Freshman RHP Cassandra Williams was three outs away from a complete-game shutout, but that was the only blemish on her effort against the Wolves. She gave up six hits with two strikeouts and issued no walks to keep the Wolves in check.

The Coyotes grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Thalia Ortiz reached on a single through the left side, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Alyssa Ramos.

That's when Nicole Nobbe stepped up and came through with a double down the left-field line and CSUSB went up 1-0.

The score remained at 1-0 until the sixth when Ramos scored on an error by the first baseman and Nobbe, who singled, scored on a sacrifice fly by Williams.

WOU got a home run in the eighth by Kim Kuehl, but Williams settled down with a strikeout, a ground out and a line out to second to end the game.

Ramos and Nobbe each had two hits.

Coyotes 7, Chaminade 2

CSUSB earned multiple run innings in the first and fourth innings and won going away against a team it defeated a day ago by the eight-run rule.

Mary Menicucci ripped a three-run double in the first, and after Chaminade answered with two in the second, the Coyotes added security with a four-run fourth.

Ortiz led off the inning with a solo homer to left, and one out later, Nobbe doubled, Tiffany McIntosh walked and Menicucci singled to load the bases for Williams.

She laced a one-out double to left center that cleared the bases and the Coyotes had their 7-2 lead.

Ortiz had three hits, while Nobbe and Menicucci each had two hits.

Stephanie Luhman earned the victory in seven innings. She had three strikeouts and gave up five hits. Both runs were earned.
