Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO -- Visiting Sonoma State showed timely hitting as the Coyotes were swept 6-2 and 7-3 in Saturday's CCAA doubleheader at Fiscalini Field.
The Coyotes (9-24, 7-16 CCAA) and Seawolves (17-10, 15-4) conclude their weekend series Sunday with a nine-inning game at 11 a.m.
Game 1: Sonoma State 6, Coyotes 2The Coyotes outhit their opponent, 10-9, but all 10 hits were singles as SSU jumped ahead 5-0 entering the Coyotes' half of the fifth inning.
In the fifth,
Warren Fishback and
Steven Chagolla reached base on consecutive singles.
Nick Massari made it three straight with a well-placed bunt to load the bases with no outs.
Two outs later, William Oullette placed a single through the left-side and the Coyotes cut the deficit to 5-2.
But that would be it for CSUSB scoring. The Coyotes went down in order in the sixth and seventh, before
Nolan Almodovar came through with a single to center to lead off the eighth.
Almodovar,
Richard Mount and Massari each had two hits.
Starter RHP
Dylan Mitchell threw 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and four walks.
Reliever
Tyler Rahier did a nice job of pitching the last 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four without issuing a walk. He scattered four hits and gave up two runs.
Game 2: Sonoma State 7, Coyotes 3SSU's Jackson Stogner produced five RBI with three coming off a three-run homer to right center.
Down 4-0, the Coyotes climbed back with a three-run third.
Almodovar reached on a one-out error, and ouellette followed with a single.
Nick Oddo then loaded the bases with another single, and
Remington Miller drove in two with a single, and Oddo came around to score on an error by the first baseman.
But the Coyotes got just one more hit the rest of the way --a single by Oddo in the fifth.
Ouellette and Oddo each had two hits. CSUSB was held without an extra-base hit.
Freshman RHP
Tyler Wells (1-3) took the loss in five innings. He had six strikeouts wtih two walks and allowed five hits. All six runs allowed were earned.
