Coyotes enjoy the lights of Turlock

CSUSB earns doubleheader sweep over Warriors

Victoria Lievanos' 3-run homer keyed the Coyotes in game two.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK -- CSUSB struck with a six-run fifth inning for all of its runs in a 6-5 victory over host Cal State Stanislaus in the first game of a CCAA softball doubleheader Friday afternoon.

The Coyotes made the day a sweep with a 12-3 win that ended due to the eight-run rule in the sixth.

CSUSB (13-8 overall, 7-5 CCAA) and Warriors (8-13, 4-8) finish the four-game, two-day series Saturday at 11 a.m. The Coyotes then return home Tuesday against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Game 1: Coyotes 6, Cal State Stanislaus 5

CSUS grabbed the lead with a two-run first and a three-run second for a 5-0 lead until the Coyotes got going in the decisive fifth inning.

The Coyotes got the bases loaded with Mary Menicucci reaching on a walk, Kristin Lopez (bunt) and Thalia Ortiz (single).

That brought up Alyssa Ramos, whose RBI-single gave the Coyotes their first run. Nicole Nobbe was hit by a pitch for an RBI and Tiffany McIntosh walked and CSUSB trailed 5-3.

Victoria Lievanos cut the deficit to 5-4 on a sacrifice fly, and then Cassandra Williams ripped a two-run double to left center and the Coyotes had their 6-5 lead.

Williams (8-4) threw seven innings and struck out a season-high 10 with six walks.

Ortiz and Nobbe each had two hits.

Game 2: Coyotes 12, Cal State Stanislaus 3 (6 innings)

Victoria Lievanos added a power game to her repertoire this offseason and it came through again on a three-run home run that capped a four-run third inning.

CSUS took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Coyotes were not deterred as they scored multiple runs from the fourth inning on for the sweep.

Ramos, Mary Menicucci and Lopez all had two RBI games, and Ortiz had two doubles and Lievanos added a double in the fifth.

Stephanie Luhman earned the start and allowed only four hits. She gave up three runs (all earned) and did not earn a walk with one strikeout.
