CHICO -- Victoria Lievanos drove in three runs and Thalia Ortiz had three hits to lead the Coyotes over host Chico State 5-0 in the opener of Friday's CCAA softball doubleheader.
The host Wildcats answered back with a 4-0 win the nightcap.
The teams are off tomorrow due to the impending storm that is supposed to strike northern California. The series finale is scheduled for Sunday with an 11 a.m. start.
Game 1: Coyotes 5, Chico State 0
Lievanos struck with a two-run single through the right side and set the tone for a 2-0 lead through the first inning.
Ortiz led off with a single to short and one out later, Nicole Nobbe reached base on an error on the second baseman.
After Tiffany McIntosh walked, Lievanos came thorugh with the pivotal runs-scoring single.
The Coyotes added a single run in the second on an Ortiz double that plated Kristin Lopez.
In the fourth, Lievanos and Cassandra Williams earned back-to-back RBI. Lievanos on a bases-loaded walk and Williams with a single up the middle.
Williams was outstanding on the mound. She went the distance with two strikeouts, no walks and five hits.
Game 2: Chico State 4, Coyotes 0
CCAA-leading hitter Nobbe went 2-for-3 and Mary Menicucci also had two hits, but the host Wildcats (16-13, 12-10) struck with two runs in the first, then padded single runs in the second and third for the victory.
Menicucci has been a difficult out in the last three weeks as she has raised her batting average to .315. She was hitting .222 on March 7 and is now at .315 -- a jump of 93 points in 28 days.
