SAN BERNARDINO -- An 11-day break sometimes can be a bit too much time off.

Not so for the the Coyotes' softball team, which seemed to relish the break with a twinbill sweep over Hawaii-Hilo in nonconference play Wednesday afternoon.

The Coyotes scored six runs on seven hits and sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning and held on for a 7-5 victory over the Vulcans in the opener.

And then in the second, Nicole Nobbe and Tiffany McIntosh hit back-to-back homers in the first inning as the Coyotes went on to win 9-1 in a 5-inning shortened contest.

CSUSB (18-13 overall) now heads to Chico State this weekend for a four-game series with the Wildcats that begins Friday afternoon.

Game 1: Coyotes 7, Hawaii-Hilo 5

CSUSB grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a McIntosh ground out before erupting for its six-run second.

Thalia Ortiz and Alyssa Ramos came through with back-to-back, two-out RBI singles to push the Coyotes ahead 4-0.

Nobbe and McIntosh followed with run-scoring doubles and Victoria Lievanos made the inning complete with a run-scoring single of her own and CSUSB led 7-0.

The Vulcans came back with a single run in the fourth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh, but the pivotal second for the Coyotes was more than enough to snap CSUSB's four-game losing streak.

Ramos, Nobbe, McIntosh and Lievanos all had two hits for CSUSB. McIntosh had a pair of RBI.

On the mound, junior RHP Stephanie Luhman had five strikeouts and gave up nine hits. Three of her five runs allowed were earned.

Game 2: Coyotes 9, Hawaii-Hilo 1 5 innings

The one-two punch of Nobbe and McIntosh came through again for coach Tacy Duncan's crew.

Nobbe laced a solo shot over the center-field wall, and McIntosh laced her 12th home run of the season with a towering blast, that easily cleared over the left-field wall.

UHH got a run in the second, but CSUSB answered right back with a five-run, six-hit third.

Lievanos keyed the pivotal inning with a two-run double to center that scored Ortiz (single) and Nobbe (single).

The Coyotes, who led 7-1 through four innings, finished off the Vulcans in the fifth.

Nobbe and McIntosh each walked to begin the inning and Lievanos laced her second double of the game that scored Nobbe.

Then with no outs, Mary Menicucci laid down a bunt that easily scored pinch-runner Brittany Resendez from third.

Lievanos had three RBI, and Menicucci and Nobbe each had two RBI.

Nobbe, Lievanos and Menicucci led with two hits apiece.
