Coyotes lose 74-72 heartbreaker

CHICO -- Sophomore Alexcia Mack scored 16 second-half points, only to have Chico State earn a 74-72 victory with five seconds remaining in the game.

CSUSB (4-15 overall, 3-13 CCAA) returns to Northern California next weekn with games at Cal State East Bay on Thursday and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday that will be nationally-broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.

Both teams played extremely well in the second half as the Coyotes shot 48.3 percent from the floor, only to be outdone by Chico State's 51.6 percent clip.

Still, the Coyotes went right down to the wire against one of the annual conference kingpins.

The Coyotes led 65-59 with 4:04 remaining when Mack drained a 3-pointer.

Chico State came back with an 11-4 run and led 70-69 with 1:01 left on Courtney Hamilton's jumper. The Wildcats padded the lead to three with a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left.

But Mack came right back and fired in a 3-pointer to tie the game at 72-72 with 13 seconds left.

On Chico State's next possession, Hamilton missed a jumper, but McKenzie Dalthrop gathered the rebound and scored the game-winner on the put-back.

Tayllor Gipson had 14 points and led the Coyotes in rebounds with eight. Briana Baker added 13 with three steals.

Sophomore Adriana Brodie scored nine points with seven rebounds.

Dalthrop led the Wildcats (15-5, 11-5) with 20.
