Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO – The Coyotes got the job at the plate and on the mound in Friday afternoon's doubleheader sweep over visiting Sonoma State in CCAA softball.
Mary Menicucci came through in the eighth inning with a game-winning RBI –single in the Coyotes' 3-2 win and CSUSB came through with four runs in the sixth inning for an 8-0 win.
The Coyotes (9-6 overall and 3-3 CCAA) and Seawolves (7-5, 1-5) resume their series Saturday at 11 a.m.
Game 1: Coyotes 3, Sonoma State 2 8 innings
Down 2-0 in the fourth inning, CSUSB came through with a pair of runs – both unearned to tie the game.
After
Melissa Roberts walked with two outs,
Kristin Lopez laid down a bunt to third. The third baseman then overthrew to first and the ball caromed in right-field foul territory, allowing both Coyotes to score on the error.
Both starting pitchers – SSU's Amanda Llerena and CSUSB's
Stephanie Luhman – threw shutout ball over the next three innings.
In the eighth,
Tiffany McIntosh led off with a walk and
Na'Tavia Lee came on to pinch run. One out later,
Victoria Lievanos doubled to right and the Coyotes had runners at second and third .
That's when Menicucci stepped up to the plate and ripped a single to left for the game-winning run.
Nicole Nobbe led the Coyotes with three hits and Lievanos, Menicucci and Roberts each had two hits.
SSU's Megan Konieczka and Alison Strycula each had two hits.
Luhman earned the complete-game victory. She struck out three, walked three and gave up seven hits. Both runs were earned.
Game 2: Coyotes 8, Sonoma State 0 6 innings
This was one was all about the Coyotes, who grabbed a 4-0 lead through three innings, then scored four in the sixth to end it.
Cassandra Williams and Menicucci each had bases-loaded RBI walks in the first, and the Coyotes utilized big sticks from
Thalia Ortiz and
Victoria Lievanos, who had solo homers in the second and third innings, respectively.
And with the Coyotes leading 4-0 through five innings, they crushed out four runs on four hits in the sixth.
Ortiz came to the plate with the bases loaded and lifted a sharp single to left that the outfielder mishandled, bringing in three runs with only one RBI.
With Ortiz at second, Nobbe came to the plate and ripped another single to left to bring in Ortiz.
Nobbe again had three hits and Ortiz had two.
Freshman RHP
Cassandra Williams (6-4) had two strikeouts with two walks and gave up eight hits with just two extra-base hits.
