Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO – The Coyotes made the most of about a 10-minute span Friday afternoon that made their Valentine's Day complete.
Down 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Coyotes rallied with four runs and earned a walk-off victory over No. 4 Humboldt State in the second game of the teams' doubleheader.
The Lumberjacks won the opener 8-5.
Game 1: Humboldt State 8, Coyotes 5
The Lumberjacks brought the lumber in the opener, hitting four homers that accounted for six runs. HSU got a three-run home run from Tiffany Hollingsworth in the first inning and two batters later, Alison McKibbin clubbed a solo shot.
CSUSB came right back in its half of the first.
Thalia Ortiz opened with a walk, moved to second on a single by
Nicole Nobbe and advanced to third when
Tiffany McIntosh loaded the bases with a hit by pitch.
Cassandra Williams ripped a shot to left that cleared the bases and reached third on the throw and the Coyotes were down 5-3. Williams, then, came in to score on an illegal pitch thrown by HSU's Katie Obbema.
But HSU added a run in the fifth, and got a pair of homers from Hollingsworth and Sarah Fox in the seventh.
Nobbe and Williams each had two hits for the Coyotes.
Victoria Lievanos and Ortiz had the others to account for CSUSB's six hits.
Williams took the loss. She threw 6 1/3 innings, allowing 12 hits, eight runs – all earned – and had four strikeouts.
Game 2: Coyotes 4, No. 4 Humboldt State 3
The Lumberjacks were in control of this one, holding a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh before lightning struck big time.
Tiffany McIntosh led off and clubbed a shot to deep center field that made sure the Coyotes would not be shut out.
After Williams popped out to third and
Mary Menicucci flew out to seventh, the Coyotes got going.
Lievanos reached on a hit by pitch and
Jennifer Del Mar ripped a double to center that brought home Lievanos to make the score 3-2.
Melissa Roberts came in to pinch-hit for
Darian Manuz and the sophomore drilled a double to score pinch-runner
Brittany Resendez and the game was tied at 3-3.
That brought up Ortiz, who finished off the Jacks with a single to right center to score Manuz, who replaced Roberts.
Ortiz, McIntosh and Williams all had two hits for the Coyotes, who had nine for the game.
Junior RHP
Stephanie Luhman (2-0) threw a gutty performance for the victory. She went 7 innings, gave up nine hits, three runs (all earned) and struck out two with four walks. She settled down after giving up her three runs in the second with five straight shutout innings.
