Coyotes win streak ends; UCSD prevails 1-0

Callahan's late goal drops CSUSB women to 9-1, 2-1 in CCAA

Peyton Nocciolo had one shot on goal in UCSD match.
Box Score     LA JOLLA -- Cal State San Bernardino's nine-match win streak to open the season came to an end Friday night as UC San Diego, a perennial powerhouse off to a slow start in 2014, scored a late goal to earn a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over the Coyotes in a California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer match before 549 fans at Tritons Field.
The Coyotes came into the match with a 9-0 record, 2-0 in the CCAA, and ranked No. 8 in the nation by the Division II soccer coaches. UCSD entered the match with a .500 record and started CCAA play 0-2 for the first time since joining Division II 14 years ago.
CSUSB had four shots on goal among their nine shots in the match but Tritons keeper Kelcie Brodsky turned back each shot, two of them by leading CSUSB scorer Kiana Quarles.
Something had to give and it was UCSD that broke through at 79:53 of the second half as All-American Cassie Callahan headed in a corner kick off the foot of teammate  Jordyn McNutt for her third goal of the season and 23rd of her career. UCSD had 11 shots, five of them on goal, but Coyotes keeper Emily Whyte stopped four of them in the narrow defeat.
Callahan's goal was only the third that the CSUSB defense has allowed in 10 matches.
UC San Diego has dominated the series since the two teams competed in Divisioin III, now leading with 32 wins against only five losses and six ties.
The Coyotes will try to regain their winning form at 2 p.m. Sunday at home on Coyote Premier Field against Cal State L.A., part of the soccer doubleheader featured as part of the year-long 30th anniversary celebration of Coyote athletics, which began in 1984-85.
