Box Score SAN BERNARDINO (Oct. 17, 2014) -- A year ago, Cal State San Bernardino upset an unbeaten Cal State Stanislaus team in overtime to advance to the NCAA West Regional title women's soccer game.
The rematch that took place Friday afternoon at Coyote Premier Field didn't quite have the high stakes that was last year's game, but don't tell that to the Coyotes.
CSUSB played a well-rounded game and senior
Jasmine Williams scored the game's only goal in a 1-0 win.
CSUSB broke through in the 84th minute of play. Sophomore
Kiana Quarles secured the ball on the right-side of the field and found an open Williams inside the box. The Pasadena native went one-on-one against Warriors' GK Chelsea Lewandowski and drove the ball home.
"Great game by both teams today,'' Coyotes coach
Travis Clarke said. "We did a nice job off applying pressure and disrupting their passing.''
CSUSB out-shot the Warriors 13-4 and had six corners. Meanwhile, the Warriors had just four shots on the day, one SOG and did not have a corner.
One of the finest plays of the season arrived in the 58th minute. The Warriors' Jade Poon was on the receiving end of a pass at about the 10-yard mark. As she was about to fire off a kick, Coyotes defender
Jill Wierzbicki wrapped around and broke up a near shot that would have tested Coyotes' GK
Emily Whyte.
"That was a phenomenal play by someone who was in the right place at the right time,'' Clarke said. "Jill is so steady. It was a turning point, no question.''
CSUSB takes an 11-3 overall mark and 4-3 CCAA record into Sunday's home game against Cal State East Bay.
