Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – For 30 minutes the Coyotes' outplayed their opponent Saturday night.
Unfortunately, the game is played for 40 minutes and what Cal State Dominguez Hills did in that period of time was enough in a 62-54 Coyotes' loss in CCAA women's basketball.
The Coyotes (4-11 overall, 3-9 CCAA) found themselves trailing 14-0 through the opening four minutes and 39 seconds and battled back to tie the game with 11-plus minutes remaining.
But CSUDH (12-4, 8-4) exerted itself down the stretch for the victory.
Sophomore
Alexcia Mack led the Coyotes with 13 points and fellow sophomore
Adriana Brodie added 10 points, but poor shooting when it mattered the most factored in the decision.
After trailing by 14 early and as late as 5:30 to go in the half (30-16), the Coyotes outscored the Toros 14-5 and cut the lead to five (35-30) on a pair of
Briana Baker free throws with two seconds left in the half.
Mack helped close the deficit to one on a 3-pointer with 13:30 to go and two minutes later, Brodie hit two free throws for the game's only tie – 41-41 – with 11:53 left.
But that was as close as the Coyotes get to the lead as CSUDH took over the lead for good on a 3-pointer from Talia Rayford with 10:45 left.
Amber Wharton scored five points in the final 3:11 including a 3-pointer as CSUDH extended its lead as large as 12 in the late going.
Wharton scored a game-high 16 points and Breanne Garcia added 12.
The Coyotes return to Coussoulis Arena on Friday night when they take on Humboldt State.
