Second-half play keeps Coyotes alive

CSUSB loses 64-51 to CSULA

Senior Trinidee Trice scored a season-high 20 points against the Golden Eagles.
Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – An improved second half by the Coyotes helped, but it wasn't enough Friday night.

A late run over the final five minutes kept the visiting Cal State L.A. Golden out front in a 64-51 victory at Coussoulis Arena in CCAA play.

Senior reserve Trinidee Trice led the Coyotes with a season-high 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting and sophomore guard Alexcia Mack added 15 for CSUSB, now 4-10 overall and 3-8 in the CCAA.

The Coyotes never led against the Golden Eagles (10-5, 7-4), but got going and into the game midway through the second half.

CSULA led 41-30 with 15:12 left in the game on Emily Tevez' 3-pointer. And that's when Trice went to work. She scored six points in a 12-4 run and brought the Coyotes to their closest gap at three (45-42) on a jumper with 10:15 remaining.

On the Golden Eagles' next possession, their season-leading scorer Paige Melville hit her only 3-pointer of the game and the closest the Coyotes would get down the stretch was five points on two separate occasions.

The Coyotes finished the night hitting 31.3 percent from the field on 20-of-64 shooting. The 1-2 punch of Trice and Mack was not enough to cover the gap as the next closest Coyote in the scoring column was freshman Tatiana Dunlap with five.

Sophomore Adriana Brodie led the Coyotes in rebounds with nine and senior Tayllor Gipson had three assists.

Destinee La Fountain led the Golden Eagles with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Melville finished with 14 points – 12 in the second half.

The Coyotes conclude the weekend Saturday night against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
