Kacey Cota and
Taylor Davis were stars Saturday morning in the Coyotes' 2-0 win over Western Washington at the Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.
Cota threw a five-hit shutout and Davis connected on a two-run single to provide the difference as the Coyotes' snapped their four-game losing streak.
Cota was superb in her seven innings for the Coyotes (12-28). She retired eight consecutive batters at one point and finished with one strikeout without a walk for her first victory in four decisions.
In the seventh, she allowed consecutive singles that put the Vikings (18-17) within reach. But she induced a double play ball and capped the game with a ground out to third for the winner.
At the plate, Davis stood tall as she connected on her first base hit of the season and came through with her first RBIs.
With one out and
Monica Ferguson and
Jamie Leffingwell at third and second, respectively, Davis came through with a single to center.
Alyssa Flores had three hits and
Na'Tavia Lee had two for the Coyotes, who had seven hits for the game.
The Coyotes then made it a clean sweep Saturday when they turned back Montana State-Billings 5-1.
Cota earned the start and was more than up to the task. She went the distance and struck out three, did not issue a walk and scattererd eight hits for her second shutout on the day.
Jamie Leffingwell drove in
Alyssa Flores with a triple in the first and the Coyotes added another run in the second when Jacquelyn Lopez singled to left center and scored
Na'Tavia Lee, who singled.
Taylor Davis earned her second consecutive two-RBI day on a one-out single to center.
Alyssa Flores later clubbed a solo home run in the seventh.
