Coyotes open play at Tournament of Champions

CSUSB goes 0-3 Friday

TURLOCK – The Coyotes completed the first day of play at the Tournament of Champions, hosted by Mizuno and Cal State Stanislaus on Friday.

The Coyotes lost their three games – losing 6-0 to Azusa Pacific, 7-5 against Central Washington and 8-0 against St. Martin's.

CSUSB (11-28 overall) returns to the diamond Saturday when it faces Western Washington at 10:15 a.m. and Montana State-Billings at 1:30 p.m.

Azusa Pacific 6, Coyotes 0
Monica Ferguson had two hits that included a double, but the Coyotes were denied in their effort against the Cougars (18-14).

The Coyotes totaled six hits – Jacqueline Lopez, Charlotte Galzote, Melissa Roberts and Victoria Lievanos accounted for the other four hits. Lievanos had the only extra-base hit – a double.

Central Washington 7, Coyotes 5
Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the first inning, the Coyotes struck back at the Wildcats with a five-run first.

CSUSB sent 10 batters to the plate in the pivotal inning and rallied with five hits.

Leadoff hitter Lopez came through with a double and later scored on a first-and-third situation. Ferguson produced the team's first RBI with a run-scoring singled that brought home Galzote, who singled.

Jamie Leffingwell followed with an RBI-single that scored Ferguson. Two batters later, Lievanos' single through the left side scored Leffingwell.

Lievanos scored the Coyotes' fifth run of the inning on a passed ball.

But the Wildcats tied the score at 5-5 with a three-run third and went ahead for good with a two-run fourth.

Galzote and Lievanos each had two hits. Lopez' double was the Coyotes' only extra-base hit.

St. Martin's 8, Coyotes 0 (6 innings)
The Coyotes were held to just two hits in their game against St. Martin's (21-10 overall).

Lopez and Alyssa Ramos each singled for the Coyotes, who had only one runner reach third base.

SMU's Sam Munger and Taylor Bakos combined on the two-hitter. Munger had four strikeouts.
