LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Coyotes' M&M combination of sophomore
Brenna McIntosh and junior
Tori May set the tone at the middle blocker position for coach
Kim Cherniss' squad in 2013.
Their quality efforts this season reached nationwide status Wednesday as both were honored with All-American honors by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
McIntosh (Yorba Linda) was named to the first-team squad after helping the Coyotes to their eighth consecutive CCAA title and 14
th consecutive NCAA West Region final appearance. She led the CCAA in all blocking categories (solo blocks-43), block assists (115), total blocks (158) and blocks/set (1.25) and was third in hitting percentage (.347). She was a two-time CCAA player of the week, a first-team All-CCAA selection, a Daktronics West Region first-teamer and an NCAA West Region all-tournament selection.
Her personal highlight film of the season occurred the first week of November when she established school record efforts in consecutive matches – attack percentage (.933, 14 kills, 0 errors, 15 attacks) against Cal State Stanislaus and block assists (15) against Chico State.
McIntosh also was named to the Daktronics All-American team that is conducted by the nation's sports information directors. She was named to the third team.
May (Redlands) was outstanding in her debut season with the Coyotes after playing two seasons at Colorado State University. She led the CCAA in attack percentage (.387), earned first-team All-CCAA honors, was a two-time CCAA player of the week, and was nearly unstoppable in the NCAA regional where she earned all--tourney honors.
She led last week's tourney in attack percentage with an impressive .582 (51 kills, 5 errors and 79 attacks).
"Earning an All-American honor is the ultimate individual achievement and I'm really happy for both Brenna and Tori,'' head coach
Kim Cherniss said. "Brenna's all-around game creates such an impact in scoring both in kills and blocks per set. For her to achieve this accolade so early in her career bodes well for Brenna and our program in the next few years.
"People might think it comes natural to Tori because of her stature. She works extremely hard and got better and better as the season went along. Tori is a force inside who creates a sizeable obstacle for our opponents that's difficult to overcome.
McIntosh and May become the 15
th and 16
th individual all-Americans for Cherniss – all since the 2000 season. CSUSB has now had 36 All-American honors in the history of Coyote volleyball.
CSUSB finished its season 27-6 overall and 21-1 in the CCAA.
