BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Coyotes' dream season came to an end on a frozen Friday night near the Canadian border as host Western Washington earned a 1-0 win in the NCAA West Region title game.
The Vikings' Anna Geldenhuys scored the game's only goal early in the 46
th minute and advanced to the Round of Eight on Sunday when they face St. Edward's.
Temperatures were in the 30s throughout Friday and dropped below 32 degrees as the 7:30 p.m. game time was pushed back due to the previous game playing a shootout.
Both teams fought through a scoreless first half, but the Vikings drew the advantage on a controversial goal.
The ball was played from the left side of the penalty area that CSUSB GK
Chelsey Jones stepped off line to save.
The ball was retrieved by Geldenhuys at the top of the penalty area, where she one-timed it . Jones deflected the shot, but it stayed on target and a clearance by a Coyote defender was ruled to have come after the ball crossed the goal line.
"I am proud of the team, we had an outstanding season,'' Coyotes coach
Travis Clarke said. " It was a tough way to lose because the ball never hit the net and our players felt it never went over the line. However, credit to Western Washington, they are a solid team and were able to break our pressure and get good chances."
The Coytoes and Vikings each totaled seven shots in the first period, but CSUSB was held without a shot in the second half.
CSUSB ends the season 12-7-4 after its first-ever appearance in a regional title game.
