Coyotes clinch CCAA Tourney berth

Valverde delivers game-winning goal

Senior Day featured (l-r) Jasmine Bell, Jensen Keith, Chelsey Jones, Carissa Kutkowski and Jillian Seminara (who will redshirt this season).
Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – Junior Kellie Valverde could not have chosen a better time to score her first goal in her Coyote career.

Valverde delivered a blistering shot from 40 yards out that found its way to the back of the net, lifting the Coyotes past Chico State 1-0 in CCAA women's soccer Friday afternoon.

The goal wasn't just a game-winning shot, but it secured a berth in next week's CCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. CSUSB guaranteed itself one of four conference postseason berths with its 27th points, four more than third-place UC San Diego with one game remaining.

The conference tourney begins Friday in Turlock.

"We're enjoying it tonight,'' coach Travis Clarke said. "We still have a big game Sunday that determines seeding. We'll enjoy the win tonight and forget about it tomorrow and get ready for a bus trip.''

Chico State had control of the ball for most of the second half, until Valverde broke free.

In the 72nd minute, Jasmine Williams got control of the ball and fed it to Valverde. She raced up the right side of the field and fired across the field that found the net past Wildcats GK Brianna Furner's right side.

The Coyotes held off the Wildcats over the next 18 minutes and when the horn sounded, Clarke received an ice water bath in front of CSUSB's bench.

Clarke gave credit to Valverde, who he said is one of his team's most technically sound players.

"I thought (Kellie) did well in the first half,'' he said. "She was our most dangerous player in about a 10-minute stretch. It was her day.''

Senior GK Chelsey Jones earned her 18th career shutout and her 10th this season, tying the single-season school record.

CSUSB takes a 10-5-3 overall mark and 8-4-3 conference slate into Sunday's game.

"We're looking forward to a good match against a team that is always well prepared,'' Clarke said. "It's another good test for us.''

Chico State is now 7-8-2, 5-8-2.
