SAN BERNARDINO -- The 14th and final shot for the Coyotes' women's soccer team ended up on the swift foot of senior
Jani Carmona-Urbano.
The Lompoc native made sure that it mattered as she delivered a deftly placed shot with 31 seconds remaining in the first overtime as the Coyotes defeated visiting Cal Poly Pomona 1-0 in the CCAA opener for both squads.
The victory pushes the Coyotes to a 2-0-1 overall mark as they prepare for Sunday's game against San Francisco State. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Coyote Premier Field.
It was a defensive battle throughout, but in the end the Coyotes prevailed with a shot from one of the premier players in the league. Freshman
Leilani Konrad had the ball on the left side and found Carmona-Urbano, who went one-on-one against Cal Poly Pomona GK Sarah Rohman. The Coyotes' midfielder forced Rohman out and placed her kick toward the left-side for the win.
CSUSB out-shot the Broncos 14-7 and had seven SOG against Rohman. Meanwhile, CSUSB defended well, allowing just three SOG with only one total shot in the opening half.
Junior
Carissa Kutkowski had two ample chances for a tally late in the game's 39th minute, but on each occasion, Rohman held steady.
Senior GK
Priscilla Collings earned her first victory as a Coyote. She replaced starter
Chelsey Jones in the 29th minute after Jones sustained an ankle injury. Her status for Sunday's game wasn't known at press time.
The Broncos are now 1-1 overall.
