SAN BERNARDINO -- It wasn't how head coach Lance Thompson would draw up his first home game at Coyote Premier Field. But a hard fought contest against his former team was a doozy.
The first-year coach and his Coyotes took to the pitch Friday afternoon against Cal Poly Pomona and the end result established a first in Coyote history.
CSUSB and Cal Poly Pomona battled to a 0-0 tie in double overtime and it marked the first time in the program's history that a team has earned three consecutive draws in a season. The Coyotes, now 0-0-3 overall and 0-0 in the CCAA, look to break that streak Sunday when they take on San Francisco State at 11:30 a.m.
Senior All-American
Tanner Olinger and the Coyotes' defense was solid, yet again, The Vancouver, Wash., native had six saves, but perhaps none was bigger than with 30 seconds left in regulation.
The Coyotes were called for a foul and that allowed CPP to line up for a free kick from outside the box. CPP's Abiel Coronado delivered a shot that had eyes for the back of the net, but Olinger wrapped his mits around the ball and that effectively forced the game into extra time.
Olinger had two saves in the first overtime, the biggest was a one-on-one confrontation with Ian Trantow two minutes into the period. The Bronco seemed to have bead on the play, but Olinger stood his ground and turned back the shot.
A minute later, Olinger saved another of Coronado's shots.
In the second OT, both teams had a SOG, but could not make the shot count.
The Coyotes out-shot the Broncos 13-8 and held the advantage on corners, 6-1.
CPP is now 2-0-1, 0-0-1.
