SAN BERNARDINO -- Funny thing the NCAA web site featured Friday's game between the Coyotes and CCAA South Divison-leading Cal State L.A.
The gist of the note was the two schools were playing for first place. But in the end, the Coyotes were the ones who added to the NCAA notoriety.
For the fourth time this season, the Coyotes played to a 0-0 draw and became only the third team in NCAA Division II history to accomplish that feat after their scoreless tie to the Golden Eagles at Coyote Premier Field.
CSUSB is now 3-0-6 overall and 3-0-4 CCAA and takes on UC San Diego on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
CSUSB had two potential shots at game-winners late. With 5:31 left in regulation, freshman
Ricardo Velasco worked the ball just left of the post. A small opening appeared between the post and Golden Eagles GK Waleed Cassis, but the CSULA stopper came up with a big save.
Then at the 104 mark in the second overtime, Velasco nailed the post from 20 yards out and ricocheted away.
The story for CSUSB again was its stellar play on defense. The Coyotes allowed only one SOG and that was in the first period.
Senior All-American
Tanner Olinger earned his fifth save of the season and improved his saves percentage to .969 on the campaign -- 31 of 32 SOG.
Velasco totaled nine shots and had two SOG -- the only ones on the day for CSUSB.
CSUSB now shares the scoreless ties record with Rockhurst and fellow CCAA member Chico State in 2004.
CSULA is 6-2-1, 5-1-1.
