Box Score: Coyotes 1, Cal Poly Pomona
POMONA -- The beat goes on for the Coyotes in their stellar defensive play in 2012. And the offense is finding a way to complement the defensive stranglehold at just the right time.
Freshman
Leo Mendoza delivered a goal on a cross from
Anthony Arellano and
Corey Christ in the 54th minute as the Coyotes shutout host Cal Poly Pomona 1-0 in CCAA men's play Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Field.
The 3-0-5 Coyotes became the first CSUSB team in program history to begin a season unbeaten through eight games since becoming a CCAA member in 1991.
The school record for best start is 7-0-3 in 1987 when the Coyotes reached the Division III Final Four.
Mendoza's goal was his second on the season and he beat CPP goalkeeper Kris Minton with a shot from 15 yards that reached the upper right corner.
Defensively, CSUSB put forth one more shutout in a season where it already ranks among the top squads in the nation.
All-American GK
Tanner Olinger earned his fourth shutout and the team earned its sixth in eight games. The Vancouver, Wash., native had only one save on the day as CPP totaled nine shots.
CSUSB had 15 shots with seven SOG at Minton. Juniors
Demetri Burgos and
Marco Martinez had two SOG and Mendoza had his only SOG connect for the game-winner.
All told, the Coyotes have played 820 minutes in eight games and have allowed only two goals with one coming on a PK in the first game of the season.
The Coyotes play host to Cal State L.A. on Friday in a key CCAA south match-up.
CPP is 2-4-1, 0-4-1.
