Coyotes survive in 1-1 draw against Colorado Mesa

CSUSB takes on Northwest Nazarene on Labor Day

Box Score: Coyotes 1, Colorado Mesa 1 2OT

ST. GEORGE, Utah
-- Coach Lance Thompson wouldn't call his team's game against Colorado Mesa a "Saturday Night Massacre'' but it wasn't far off.

The Coyotes played 36 minutes down two men and 78 minutes down at least one, but found a way to earn a 1-1 tie against Colorado Mesa in a nonconference game played at Dixie State.

"I give our guys an awful lot of credit of hanging in there and surviving,'' said Thompson in his first game as Coyotes head coach. "I don't know that I've ever been through a game like that in my years of coaching.''

The Coyotes were dealt six yellow cards and two red cards and their offense suffered because of it. CSUSB had just four shots for the game -- all in the first half -- and played in survival mode for game's final 65 minutes.

The Coyotes grabbed a 1-0 lead on Demetri Bourgos' header off a corner with assists to Raul Gomez and Michael Cable.

CSUSB remained out front until All-American GK Tanner Olinger was called for a red card at the 73-minute mark. CMU's Alan Hernandez scored on the penalty kick and that remained the score.

Olinger had one save on the night coming on a penalty kick at the 27-minute mark.

The Coyotes remain in St. George and take on Northwest Nazarene at 10 a.m. Labor Day.
