Darren Dworak gave Cal State San Bernardino its only run with a solo home run in the second inning, but Chico State starter Kagan Hopkins threw shutout ball the rest of the way as Chico State earned a 9-1 win over the Coyotes in the CCAA series opener Thursday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.
The Coyotes dropped to 14-12 overall and 11-10 in the CCAA, while the Wildcats are 26-9, 16-9. The series resumes Friday with a doubleheader that begins at 12 p.m.
Hopkins allowed just five hits and struck out four to improve his record to 5-3. CSUSB had just four runners left on base. In the final six innings, he retired 21 of 23 batters.
Chico State took the lead for good in the third inning with four runs, but just one was earned against Coyotes starter
Casey McCarthy. Cody Foster added a three-run home in the seventh and CSUC added two runs in the eighth inning.
T.J. Yasuhara and Pierson Jeremiah had two hits for Chico State. Cody Webber added two RBI.
McCarthy threw seven hits in 7 innings. He had six strikeouts, but walked three and hit two batters.
