SAN FRANCISCO
-- It took a team effort for the Coyotes in their 5-3 win over San Francisco State on Friday in their CCAA baseball series opener.

Offensively, junior Ethan Chapman led the a 13-hit attack, going 4-for-5 with a solo home run, and senior Brandon Day clubbed a two-run home run, while on the mound senior Casey McCarthy threw another gutty effort, going 8 2/3 innings as the Coyotes kept pace in the CCAA chase.

The Coyotes snapped their two-game losing streak and take a 23-15 overall and 20-13 CCAA slate into Saturday's doubleheader against the Gators (14-28, 11-21). CSUSB remains in second place in the CCAA.

Day gave the Coyotes a 2-0 lead in the first when he ripped 2-1 offering from Ryan DeJesus. It was Day's third home run on the year.

SFSU came back with two runs in the first, but CSUSB grabbed the lead again with a two-run third.

Chapman led off with a home down the right-field line and four batters later, senior Darren Dworak worked an 11-pitch at-bat with a run-scoring single to right that scored Day, who singled to right center.

SFSU came back with a run in the fifth, but CSUSB earned a two-run lead in the eighth when Dworak lifted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Paul Eshleman, who led off the inning with a double.

McCarthy was pulled with two outs in the ninth. Senior All-American closer Josh Pond gave up a walk to load the bases, but the Coyotes secured the win when Pond got Ivan Otsuka to fly out to center.

McCarthy (5-3) gave up three runs, two earned and struck out three. He walked three. Pond's save was his fourth and his 20th in his two-year career.

Day, Dworak and Edwin Mendoza each had two hits. For Mendoza, he is now 18-for-38 at the plate since April 5.
