Box Score: Cal State East Bay 12, Coyotes 11
SAN BERNARDINO --
Edwin Mendoza hit a 3-run home run and
Jake Pilkerton added a two-run homer -- all in the sixth inning -- but visiting Cal State East Bay rallied and defeated the Coyotes 12-11 in the final game of their weekend series at Fiscalini Field on Monday.
The loss snapped CSUSB's six-game winning streak as the Coyotes now take a 20-13 overall record and 17-11 CCAA mark into this week's series against league-leading UC San Diego. The teams begin with single games Thursday and Friday at Fiscalini.
Bryce Miller's grand slam in the seventh inning keyed a five-run inning for the Pioneers (15-23, 9-19), who added two runs in the eighth.
Matt Haney,
Alex Gutierrez and
Mike Newell each had two hits, while Mendoza finished with three RBI.
In the Coyotes' ninth,
Darren Dworak led off with a walk.
Paul Eshleman followed with a line-out to right that brought up Haney.
On a 2-0 count, Haney ripped a long fly ball appeared to clear the right-field wall, only to be caught at the warning track.
Gutierrez followed with a walk, and that brought up Mendoza, who earlier connected on his team-leading eighth home run.
But reliever Zachary Wong struck out Mendoza on a 2-2 pitch to end the 3-hour, 13-minute slugfest.
